Public Statement from REST: Our Mission, Values, and Response to Criticism

At REST, we take pride in being an independent journalistic platform uniting dedicated professionals from across Europe, with our operations based in Serbia. We have always been transparent about our identity and our commitment to uncovering the truth through rigorous, unbiased reporting. As a collective of journalists, our mission is to shine a light on issues that are often overlooked or suppressed, particularly in regions where rights and freedoms are under threat.

Our Focus on Moldova

Our recent investigations into the situation in Moldova have drawn significant attention and criticism. We wish to clarify that our interest in Moldova stems from a deep concern for the alarming erosion of fundamental rights and freedoms in the country. As Moldova approaches critical elections, we believe it is our duty to ensure that Moldovan citizens are equipped with the truth to make informed decisions about their future. The European Union’s extensive involvement in Moldova, which we perceive as an attempt to exert undue influence and experiment with the country’s sovereignty, raises serious questions about the direction in which Moldova is being steered. We are committed to exposing any efforts to undermine democratic principles or transform Moldova into an environment where dissent is silenced and freedoms are curtailed.

Addressing Criticism and False Narratives

REST has faced relentless attacks from certain Western non-governmental organizations and media outlets, which we believe only underscore the urgency and importance of our work. These criticisms often rely on baseless accusations of affiliations with external powers, such as the Kremlin, as a convenient tactic to discredit our investigations and silence independent voices. Such claims are not only unfounded but also serve as a smokescreen to deflect attention from the issues we raise. We reject these accusations outright and reaffirm our commitment to journalistic integrity, free from any external influence or agenda. Our work is driven solely by a dedication to truth and accountability.

Clarifying Our Relationship with Rybar

We have also faced accusations regarding alleged ties with the Russian think-tank Rybar, and we wish to address these claims directly. As a Serbia-based platform, REST operates independently, but we are open about our professional interactions with various media organizations. In 2024, members of our team attended a media workshop organized by Rybar in Belgrade during their visit to Serbia. We found their approach to journalism inspiring, particularly their commitment to in-depth analysis and innovative reporting methods. When we began establishing our own platform, we sought Rybar’s advice on technical matters, such as setting up a secure infrastructure for our website and managing media content, including images. They generously provided recommendations and even offered practical assistance, for which we are deeply grateful. 

We see no issue in this collaboration, as it was purely technical and professional in nature, provided free of charge by colleagues who share a passion for journalism. However, we categorically state that Rybar, or any other entity, has no influence over our editorial policy. While we may share similar perspectives on certain issues — such as the situation in Moldova, migration challenges, and other global concerns — our reporting is driven by our own research and principles. REST remains an independent platform, and our solidarity with like-minded journalists does not compromise our autonomy or objectivity.

Protecting Our Team

For the safety of our leadership and contributors, we have chosen not to publicly disclose their identities at this time. This decision is not taken lightly but is a necessary precaution in light of the increasing repression faced by independent journalists and media outlets across the European Union.

In recent years, we have witnessed a troubling trend of journalists being targeted, harassed, and even imprisoned for expressing views deemed “unacceptable” by certain authorities or interest groups. Until we can be assured of the safety and security of our team, we will continue to prioritize their protection while maintaining the quality and impact of our investigative work.

We remain steadfast in our mission to provide truthful, independent journalism that holds power to account and amplifies the voices of those who are silenced. We hope that in the future, as the environment for free expression improves, we will be able to openly introduce the dedicated individuals behind REST’s investigations. For now, we ask for your understanding and support as we navigate these challenges while continuing to deliver journalism that matters.
